Would you leave your child alone?

I've been following the whole Madeleine McCann story with a lot of interest. (Basically, I'm drawn to horrible stories about things that could happen to your child that'll feed my nightmares.)

While I'll be really surprised if it turns out the mother and father were responsible in this case, as the Portuguese police seem to suspect, I keep coming back to one thought: Why on earth would you leave a four-year-old and a pair of two-year-olds alone in a strange hotel room while you're yards away noshing it up? I'm not saying that this at all makes them culpable in this and I certainly don't want to kick someone when they're down, but boy, I'm just not understanding the logic of it.

My husband and I even worried about using a Disney-approved babysitting service when we wanted to get away for a fancy dinner out at Disneyworld--I can't even imagine just leaving our daughter in our room alone for a moment. As my husband said, what if a child fell out of bed and got hurt, or had a nightmare, or started feeling sick, or figured out how to open the door and wandered out? Let alone disappear under more sinister circumstances...

But maybe we're just overly cautious? Is this really the norm in Europe?
