Steve Jobs has resigned his position as CEO of Apple, effective immediately. He will stay on as chairman of the company's board of directors, and Apple has announced that Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook is the new CEO.

Jobs recommended Cook strongly in his resignation letter. He did not cite a specific reason for leaving, but did say:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

CNN reports that Apple stock is down over 5% in extended trading after the announcement.

Steve Jobs has resigned as chief executive of Apple - hope that isn't a reflection on his health. What a creative, inspiring leader.less than a minute ago via TweetDeck Favorite Retweet Reply

Sorry, but I don't feel #stevejobs resignation is cause for a joke. He went as far & as long as he could, and that is admirableless than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

Good for him! It is past time for Steve to focus on his own life and family. The world will go on and Apple will go on but he has precious little time left. Let him live it .

i feel so bad because I know he must be very gravely ill to step down. :(

i think he is very sick, probably near death. such a pity, what a visionary he is.

He is desperately ill. He has fought a brave fight and done far more than most perfectly healthy people have done. He deserves our support and thanks.

I told my son last night and he cried. We got him calmed down and through our night routine, but at 10:30, I found myself in a rocking chair holding him while he cried again. Steve Jobs is his hero, and he can't imagine him not at the helm, even if he is still going to be involved with the board.

Which I know may sound extreme, but Steve took the time to write my son an email last year about their shared love of computers, and that one email has made such a difference in my son's life. Some kids love baseball players or rock musicians. My son loves Steve Jobs. So we wish him all the best with his retirement.

He is a real force of nature. There are few people who would have survived his diagnosis as long as he has. The NY Times has a great Jobs time line:

My favorite line is from an article in 1985. Regarding the stalling of computer sales:

"Consumers and businesses are slowing their purchases of computers and questioning how much they really need the machines." LOL

A true genius.

I wish Steve all the best and hope his health is OK.

Elisa Camahort If it wasn't for you, I'd have probably not paid attention to this TechCrunch article since I'm not a fan of TechCrunch. But this... this is a great post. http://techcrunch.com/2011/08/24/steve-jobs-the-en...

blogher He's not really leaving. He will still be on the board. He's like Dumbledor, he will always be a part of Apple and advise them.

Isn't he still Chairman of the Board? So all is well. And yes Apple is well and truly entrenched in the consumer psyche. No need to be... sad. I am happy he has stepped down so he can have more Me time :)

Apple will be fine. They have an incredible management team and wonderfully talented people. He would not have stepped down if he were not truly ill. And he still remains as Chairman from what I have heard in the press. Very sad for him - sending prayers for him and his family and hoping he will experience some healing.

He is withering away. Sad. Cant believe hes hung onto his position for so long. Stock goes down not as punishment to apple but because hes the leader and without him people have doubts the comp will do as well. Has nothing to do with being heartless about his decision as the other poster implied.

What's sad to me is the effect The announcement is having on Appke's stock price. Wait. Does Steve Jobs not have cancer? oh right. He does. So where does America get off having a negative reaction to his decision to abandon a corporation in favor of pursuing the Life part of his unalienable right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness? Do we somehow expect that as a person battling a life threatening illness he should make the decision to keep making iphones instead of trying to save his own life? Here's a hint: he didn't make your iphone and it will still work tomorrow. Fare thee well Steve. It's not like they won't let you come to the company picnic anymore.
