Steve Jobs has resigned his position as CEO of Apple, effective immediately. He will stay on as chairman of the company's board of directors, and Apple has announced that Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook is the new CEO.
Jobs recommended Cook strongly in his resignation letter. He did not cite a specific reason for leaving, but did say:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

CNN reports that Apple stock is down over 5% in extended trading after the announcement.

No. More. Steve. Gasp!
A sad thing. True visionary. Anyone who has never seen the #SteveJobs #Stanford commencement speech - http://t.co/RcR34t7 says it.
Steve Jobs has resigned as chief executive of Apple - hope that isn't a reflection on his health. What a creative, inspiring leader.
Sorry, but I don't feel #stevejobs resignation is cause for a joke. He went as far & as long as he could, and that is admirable
