Here is a writing exercise for you, ladies, and you won't find it in "Writing Down the Bones."

Take thirty minutes (I hope you can) and sit down at your computer. Pull up a "new document" and create a setting--maybe a room in a house, a house somewhere, during some particular season. Maybe make it the room you're' in right now.

Then write a woman into the room. Describe a little bit of what she's wearing, how she feels.

Then write a man--a man she knows well, a man for whom she has feelings--into the room. Describe a little of what he looks like--one or two distinctive features. Have him look at her and think something.

Then write them having sex. Don't just say they do it. Really describe his actions, then hers, then his, then hers.... Write the details until you feel a little sparkly yourself--in real life, maybe a little guilty,or embarrassed. It's natural, and it's okay.

I can't tell you what a positive, healing experience it has been for me, writing sex scenes in my Romance novels. At first I didn't like it. I felt too... frankly, inadequate. Like I didn't know enough, wasn't good enough (in bed) (or on the page)... But over the years, it's changed me. Now love getting lost in the sex scenes while I'm writing them. In part, it's because I love the characters, and I so what them to get together, to share a magical love on the physical level.

And it's done WONDERS for my own sex life. Yes, I share the writing with my husband. And he's honest with me, as to whether the writing's working for him or not (if you know what I mean). The sense of embarrassment and inadequacy I'd felt in my writing, I think I felt in my own person, too--it was a direct reflection of my relationship with my own sexuality.

Writing works, my friends... Indulge!

Hi there -

This sounds like a great exercise.

When writing sex scenes for my own novel, I wrote on a number of different levels.

Writing sensually is about using words to fill the senses. Write to touch, taste, smell, emotion. Also, what I call the 'slit-eyed' state during which reality starts to blur.

These dreamlike sequences can be really fun to write, with surprising results. Let your imagination go and see what you reveal about the unconscious of your character.

Need to learn how to let go in the first draft of a sexy scene?

Try turning off your computer screen - or writing blindfolded. It's like free fall. :)

Best wishes,

KB
