Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz F-Bombs TechCrunch's Michael Arrington: Shame ... or Fame?

The setup: At the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in New York, Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz sat down with TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington in what was billed by the conference as a "fireside chat" -- but was more accurately described by TechCrunch Co-Editor Eric Shoenfeld as the lion's den."

Arrington -- who has often critiqued Bartz's 16-month tenure as CEO -- set the tone by starting off the conversation with a "How the f**k are you?" When he pressed her on the company's innovation, Bartz got cussy.

Editor's warning: Salty language in this video may not be safe for work. Unless, apparently, you work at Yahoo. Or TechCrunch.

This isn't the first time Bartz has unleashed the mouth she apparently doesn't kiss her momma with: She flipped the verbal bird in the direction of Wall Street Journal's Kara Swisher at the D7 conference last year. (She later told Swisher she hadn't meant anything by it -- which adds a little more sauce to her sass when she tells Arrington "that one I meant" in the video above.)

Bartz isn't the only sailor-swearing dignitary in the public eye (ear?) lately. Conservative Canadian Senator Nancy Ruth let her f**k flag fly earlier this month.

And then, of course, there's Joe Biden -- whose "big effing deal" comment upon the passage of the healthcare bill will likely be memorialized on T-shirts forever.

So should Bartz be called out for cussing? Why or why not?

So, which BlogHer panel should we open with a "How the f-bomb are you?"

Just kidding. But in this case, when your interviewer opens with the f***-word, the whole thing is framed as jocular repartee -- verbal jousting.

That said, I think the f-bomb is a word with enormous power, especially for women. Newsrooms taught me that when you pull it out to express how important a topic is, people listen--men listen. Then again, newsrooms of old aren't exactly paragons of corporate behavior...

Neither fame nor shame. If Carol were a man, this wouldn't be an issue.

She should not be called out for cussing. Men swear all the time. Sometimes it's notable (as with the Biden f-bomb, and even that would have been handled TOTALLY differently if it had been Hillary saying it), but most times it's not. Bartz is operating in a professional environment that is significantly weighted to the male of the species. Arrington opened w/ his own f-bomb--she was just speaking his language.

I say this as a woman who can certainly hold her own with the salty language and I've regretted the occasional f-bomb that I've bandied about. As far as I'm concerned, unless someone--male or female--is speaking to school kids or younger, they can use whatever language they like--hopefully with the understanding that there is a risk of alienating a portion of one's audience when one chooses to drop the f-bomb.

And the look on her face right before she said it killed me too.

My favorite part is when she says "you are involved in a VERY TINY company."

And he mumbles "very tiny."
