You Know You've Been Working Too Hard When
by Elana Centor

Although FedEx announced it was dropping the Kinkos name a couple of weeks ago, I just learned about it today. I have been working way too hard.

Many of us work hard 90% of the time. But sometimes we put in such incredibly ridiculous hours with so many back-to-back deadlines that even war horses have a point when they have to say " no mas."

I'm at "no mas."

Whatever I was doing in early June, I was not paying attention to the business news. An announcement that FedEx was ditching the Kinkos brand name and replaceing it with FedEx Office was the sign I needed that I am on overload. This is not a good thing.

Not only have I been on the road for the past three weeks, I've been plagued with computer problems .Here's the thing about computer problems. Misery does not love company. A computer problem is not like a case of the flu. People do not want to hear what went wrong.  They do not care if the crashes you've been experiencing were really due to your docking station and not your hard drive. It doesn't interest them. Heck, it doesn't interest me and its my computer!

Clients in particular are not interested in docking stations that blow out usb ports and tech support guys who never have their work done when they say it will be done.

They don't care. In fact, I think when you admit  there is a problem with your computer, clients secretly believe that it's not you who is the victim of technological abuse,  I think they believe it's a case of computer-munchenhausen  by proxy.

So if I am deliberately making my computer sick, how much should they entrust me to take care of their critical messaging? It's a slipperly slope when you admit you are not in control of those keyboards and c-drives.

On top of that, to be so out of the loop that I didn't know Kinkos was soon to be no more is the sign I need to say, take a nap.

Here's the thing. I wouldn't have learned about the demnise of the Kinkos name except today  FedEx announced its financials were none to pretty this quarter. The company posted its first quarterly loss in 11 years. Writinging at Corporate Dealmaker Suzanne Stevens writes,

what struck us about the earnings report was the $696 million it cost the shipping giant to change the name of its printing division. As we previously noted, FedEx announced in June that after four years as FedEx Kinko's, the company was changing the name of its printing and professional services unit to FedEx Office.

Now, the company says the charge was related to minimizing "the use of the Kinko's trade name and a reduction in the value of the goodwill resulting from the Kinko's acquisition." Still, that's one expensive name change.

I am truly sad to see the Kinkos name go away. I'm partial to "k" names and I enjoy saying, " I'm going to Kinkos."  All those consonants feel so productive. Will I say "I'm going to FedEx Office" Doubt it. I will probably say, I'm going to FEDEX to make some copies. It just doesn't sound like I'm going to have quite as much fun as I did when I went to Kinkos. Do you think its because Kinkos kinda sounds like Kinky?

I'm not the only one who is just learning about the demise of the Kinkos name. Cameron i/o shared thoughts about the change today.

In recent times, the brand has been known not for their conveniences and know-how, but for slacker staff, long turnaround times, and sky-high prices. $2 for a single sheet of colour printing? Cmon.

I remember when going to Kinko’s was exciting because you could rent PowerMacs by the hour, which was really neat when you’re the only 16-year-old who knows how to use them.

Not sure why Cameron was so slow to share the Kinkos news maybe he's been working too hard too. Roan Lavery at Renegade Zen says you know you've been working too when your concentrate wanes and you start making mistakes.

A graphic designer friend of mine recently related a story about exactly this scenario, and it’s possibly the funniest thing I’ve ever heard.

It was 3am and him and his colleague had been working 8 hours straight on an important magazine layout which was already late. It’s a small office and the room was getting stuffy.

Desperate to get some fresh air in he got up from his desk, walked over to the window and opened it. Now, this is Scotland, so it’s never warm outside at the best of times, so upon sitting back down at his desk he quickly realised it was too cold.

So what does he do? Hits Ctrl + Z on the keyboard to undo opening the window!

Now, that’s when you know you’ve been working too hard.

What was your personal tipping point when you knew without a doubt that you had been working too hard? Oh in case missing the whole drama of Kinkos wasn't enough to convince me, when I hit preview the name of this post was " You Know You've Been Working Too Hard Wehn."
