[Editor's Note: If you've ever dealt with any form of state assistance, you know there are many hoops you have to jump through to prove you're not abusing the system. However, Suzanne at The Joyful Chaos recently experienced more than a hoop. She was appalled when she was accused of "inappropriate nutrition practices for children." She's obviously and understandably riled up. -Jenna]

You Should Probably Know:

egg and milk choicesI couldn’t believe it. “Risk Factors: Inadequate Growth, Inappropriate Nutrition Practices for Children” OH.MY.WORD.

Now, maybe, just maybe this isn’t that big of a deal to you. And maybe, just maybe, I’m being a conspiracy theorist. Maybe. But I also pride myself on the kind of mom I am. Oh, I give myself a hard time about raising my voice sometimes. But this? THIS? That I have “inappropriate nutrition practices for [my] children”? I wanted to come unglued. UN.GLUED.

Read the rest to get the back story and see what Suzanne is doing now.

Someone who chooses to have 5 children also makes a pledge with themselves to be able to afford them. Clearly without state aid and "freebies" she and her husband can't. And I am sure that they are taking 6 dependents as tax deductions giving them the most money each paycheck and that still doesn't make it. So something is not working out. I am not sarcastic at all but I don't get it. I had two children because to raise them with all the benefits and college that was all both of us could afford and I did work full-time from when they were 5 and 7 as they were in school and I used childcare.

Glad you are self sufficient, and your children are too. That does not mean you have to be sarcastic. Government giveaways, as you call it, do not have to be so mean about it. Either they want to help or not. We all do the best we can to try to make it.

If you don't like the rules or can't take the labels, get off gov't assistance. It's not your "entitlement" because your husband pays taxes (too much, as you say). We all pay taxes, but we don't all take free handouts. You repeatedly quote "free" as it is not free. It is free. Free food, free milk, free cereal, free food. Why? Because you have more children than you can afford. Procreate at a reasonable level and have only those children you and your tax-paying husband can afford. No labels, no "rules" to qualify for. Problem solved. No one offended. Sounds easy enough to me.

That is exactly why I never applied for WIC. I didn't like the idea of having to take my kids for a nurse visit to prove they were "nutritionally in need" even though they have a pediatrician they go to and they are in good health.

I am a stay at home to 4 kids, and believe me we sacrifice a lot so that I can be home with our kids. I am grateful every day, and I also believe I'm exactly where I need to be at this point in my life and theirs. I see no point in working to pay for day care with maybe a few bucks left over at the end of the week. Furthermore it makes no sense to me that the government will pay daycare costs for low income families, when instead they could simply pay families with young children a monthly stipend to make it more feasible for a parent to stay home with their own kids, like many other countries do.

Didn't mean to post twice. Trying to edit and it just went on again. I also want to say I am a liberal, democrat who definitely pays more than my far share of taxes. I am 62 and self employed. Had two children who are grown and working. I never took government aid and lived within my means. I just read the blog and thought how lucky you are that you never had to work and were complaining about what someone else was saying when it was on a form letter. If they had handwritten it I would be more concerned. Best of luck to you.

I am sorry you read the fine print. However, if you take government aid you have to assume that you have to jump through hoops. That is the game. Having 4 children and being able to stay home is a luxury that most can't afford unless both parents work or one parent has an amazing income. So I say be thankful and if it takes a little name calling live with it otherwise it's daycare and full time work for you as well like most of the world. I understand your hurt but the options I would guess for you are not acceptable.
