Let’s start at the very beginning! How did you each discover your love for astrology?
We’ve been reading our Sagittarius daily horoscope for as long as we can remember, but for our 21st birthday, we were gifted a 30-page printed natal chart and interpretation. It was then that we discovered that we had four planets in Scorpio and FINALLY understood why we were way more intense, devoted and consistent than the average Archer. It was insane how accurate that reading was and we were hooked. We got astrology software and quickly started doing all of our friends’ charts. Knowing their moon and rising signs was a must! Our brains began storing every celebrity’s sign—the patterns became so obvious. As we unpacked people’s charts for them, we realized what an amazing tool it is for self-discovery. We’ve always loved helping people find creative solutions to their problems and soon we were advising everyone on how to use their charts to find hidden answers.
How did your passions for horoscopes turn in to business?
It was quite accidental in some ways. We published a multicultural, body-positive women’s magazine called HUES while at The University of Michigan, and our team always talked about astrology. One of the women who wrote for HUES got a job at Teen People magazine and connected us for our first column back in 2002. After that, we built out an entire astrology section for Lifetime TV and went on to become the official astrologers for ELLE magazine since 2008.
What inspired you launch AstroStyle and what did you hope to achieve?
While we enjoy creating content for other brands, we were ready to launch our own platform in 2006 so we could talk about astrology through more of a coaching lens. We wanted astrology to become a tool—for planning and self-knowledge—and we continue to develop products from that mindset.
What 3 things does anyone starting a website need to know?
-
Let your site evolve organically. You don’t have to come up with the perfect site structure before you launch a few pages. Your site might even evolve in dialogue with your audience, so listen to your readers. They’ll let you know what they want more of.
-
Build your list! It might take a little time, but your ideal customers WILL gather. Have a great opt-in offer to give them so they sign up for your list. These are the people who will buy all your products and sign up for your offerings.
-
Treat your list like gold: Send them little freebies and fun content “just because” instead of only emailing them when it’s time to sell.
What is the most underrated piece of advice you can give to up and coming bloggers and influencers?
Be prepared to give some content away for free—a lot of it! That’s how you build brand loyalty, so when it’s time to sell a premium offering, you’ll have a receptive and eager audience.
How does health and wellness tie in to astrology?
Astrology is a wonderful tool for easing anxiety and reducing stress. Knowing what’s ahead and where to direct your energy can definitely bring peace.

If you had to each give one wellness tip to our #BlogHer20 attendees, what would it be?
Tali: Find a practice that works with the rhythm you’re in at any given moment, and accept that this will change. Sometimes, you have the energy for power Vinyasa, other times, you need something gentler. Tune in to your body.
Ophira: Get up and go for regular walks during the day. It’s too easy to sit down at the computer and work for hours on end. If you have to reward yourself with a coffee or tea, that’s fine…just move periodically.
You are the official astrologers for ELLE magazine, and have contributed to other incredible media sources including PEOPLE and The New York Times. How do you find synergy between your own brand voice and other outlet’s voices to create engaging content?
It’s a fun hybrid experiment for us! When we were growing up, all the adults in our family had accents, because they were all immigrants. In many ways, this trained us for the job. We can tune in to the voice of a brand to speak in the audience’s language, while still delivering the same empowering horoscopes that put the reader in the driver’s seat (instead of treating you like a victim of the stars).
Which celebrity reading was most surprising?
We’ve been deeply touched by Karlie Kloss because of her commitment to empowering women in business and tech. We also gave Alicia Keys a reading on Instagram Live in December—no surprises there, she is as real and magical as you would hope!
What would our readers find most surprising about you?
We’re not sure! We tend to be pretty WSYWIG and keep it real in our approach. If anything, people are surprised that we take the time to stop and chat and are interested in who they are. Hey, we grew up in Detroit—that’s how Midwesterners roll!
How has being part of the SHE Media Partner Network helped grow your blog?
So many ways already! We’re newer partners, but over the last few months, SHE Media did a full SEO audit of our site and with their suggestions, we began writing more strategic titles, tagging photos and implementing suggestions. They also optimized the ad units on our pages for a better user experience and added Spot.IO commenting to allow users to comment on our posts.
You’re published authors, co-founders, professional astrologists, television personalities, media moguls, and so much more. What’s next?
Applied astrology! We are developing a suite of tools for using astrology even more effectively for your career and life. In 2020, we’re planning to do more broadcasting and community offerings too.
Shameless selfish question: I was born on (my January birthday) at (where I was born). What does that mean?
So much we could say, but you are a SUPER Capricorn! You have 5 planets and your North Node (destiny point) in this sign, which is definitely rare. This definitely makes you driven and business-focused. But what’s really nice is that most of the planets are in the 12th house, which is the zone of compassion…we call it the “earth angel” house. You use these gifts to support others. Building people up is what you’re here to do!
