SHE Media Partner of the Week: Lisa Lillien of Hungry Girl

Hi Lisa! Tell us a little about yourself and your brand.
I’m not a nutrition professional… I’m just hungry! I’ve always been obsessed with food and finding ways to eat the foods I love and still fit into my favorite jeans. Hungry Girl was created as a way for me to share my obsession with food, my recipes and my calorie-saving hacks with others. I launched Hungry Girl as a daily email back in 2004, and now the email goes out to over 1 million subscribers! In addition i am working on my 14th cookbook right now — and there’s a Hungry Girl magazine and podcast, too!
What’s the mission behind Hungry Girl?
I like to offer real-world advice for making smart food choices. Not everyone can just flip a switch a start eating perfectly. There are days when you’re going to crave an Oreo or want to go out for Mexican food with your friends. I’m all about finding better-for-you alternatives that are realistic for the masses.
share with us one of your favorite food bloggers?
I love Gina from Skinnytaste! She’s a friend, and we’re both very supportive of each other. Plus, her recipes are really great!
What do you focus on most when it comes to creating content?
I mostly rely on my instincts — but I also love fan feedback. We launched a Facebook group – the Hungry Girl What’s Chewin’? Community – a while back, and it’s a great place for me to see what my audience is talking about and interested in. Listen to your fans, and trust your gut! Also, just keeping things fun, interesting and delicious — and give people what they want!

Any website enhancements pay off big in the last year?
I have lots of fantastic partnerships with so many great brands that I love… and we feature sponsored, added-value content from them in the Hungry Girl daily emails. And teaming up with SheMedia has been great for monetization of the website.
Any tips you want to share with content creators just starting out?
You’re not going to be able to please everyone all the time. Some people aren’t going to always like what you do and say, and that’s okay. Just stay true to yourself, and find an audience that really wants what you are providing. Remember, content is king!
What are your 3 favorite Hungry girl recipes?
I love them all like they’re my children! 😉 If I had to choose, they would probably have to be my egg mugs (microwave egg scrambles made in a mug), growing oatmeal (oatmeal that cooks for twice as long with twice the liquid, so you get a huge serving), and broccoli-slaw stir-frys (just add protein and sauce, and you have a healthy meal in minutes)!
What are you most looking forward to in 2020?
Cuddling with my pets at home and watching Dateline.. 🙂 Professionally, I am looking forward to completing my next book, putting out great content, and traveling around the country meeting fans at a bunch of food festivals and appearances!
Share with us a favorite quote!
I have two — “Loose lips sink ships” —and also “Worry is interest paid upfront on a debt that may never come due.” — both so true!
What ingredients do you find yourself using the most?
Egg beaters, almond milk, broccoli cole slaw, cauliflower rice, old fashioned oats, chicken — and so many more!
Thanks, Lisa! We’re so excited to partner with Hungry Girl, thank you for being our SHE Partner of the Week!
