Sofia Vergara is Using Her Sweet Tooth to Support Entrepreneurs
There are plenty of reasons we adore former BlogHer speaker Sofia Vergara, one of them being her unabashed love for cakes. (Check out her Instagram Highlights if you don’t believe us.) However, when we learned about her latest and sweetest initiative, our obsession reached new levels. Just in time for the holiday season, Vergara is using her platform to support entrepreneurs with the Gift of Cake campaign, which just so happens to include BIRD Bakery founder and fellow BlogHer speaker Elizabeth Chambers. Women supporting women? We love to see it! Now, here’s how you can get involved.
Sofia has paired her love of all things sweet with her passion for supporting small businesses by partnering with the international microfinance non-profit organization Kiva and the Global COVID-19 Response Fund she helped establish at the start of the pandemic. From now until December 31st, select bakeries around the country (including Chambers’ BIRD Bakery) will provide a $25 Kiva credit with the purchase of select items. This allows the purchaser to make a $25 loan to a Kiva borrower in need of financial assistance in the wake of the pandemic – and a portion of the proceeds will directly benefit Kiva, too.
Why support Kiva? Because the 501(c)(3) non-profit and crowdfunding platform has raised nearly $1.5B in loans to create vast and inclusive financial opportunities for small business owners. Through Kiva’s work, students can afford tuition, women can start businesses, and families can access emergency care.
“Small businesses are the backbone of many communities around the world, but so many of them are still struggling to recover from the devastating effects of the pandemic,” said Vergara. “This holiday season, it is more important than ever to support small businesses. I hope that the Gift of Cake will not only make the holidays a bit sweeter but also go a long way in helping Kiva and the many deserving people they benefit.”
