Hilary Duff On Being a Mindful Mom and Educating Her Kids

We’ve all thought about what it would be like to have a chat and seek advice from our imaginary bestie, Hilary Duff. #BlogHer20 Health attendees had that chance when she sat down with her long-time pal Jessica Hall on our stage this month. The two talked about parenting, how hectic it can be to juggle a profession and raising awesome children, and all about Hilary’s fairly-new role as Chief Brand Officer for Naturalena products, Veeda and Happy Little Camper. Hilary launched her partnership with Naturalena Brands and their two brands – Veeda, their plant-based feminine care line offering natural tampons, pads, and liners, and Happy Little Camper, which offers all natural and earth-friendly diapers and wipes. They’re cost-effective, all natural and premium quality. Both brands work tirelessly to bring plant-based feminine care to the bathrooms, bags, and back-pockets of every gal. Who better to share their story than the woman who made our uncomfortable 13-year old selves confident?
When asked how she found Veeda products, Hilary shared that it was a process of trial and error after learning how many chemicals go into the typical tampon — and how ashamed she was that she hadn’t thought to question the ingredients of her usual tampon brand sooner.
“I had been using the same fem care for 20 years and never thinking about changing and not considering what was in it… It’s sitting in your body for hours, seven to ten days every month and they’re not telling us what’s in it? It’s shocking.”
Hilary was hooked on Veeda once she discovered their products — and shouting her love for the products from the rooftops. “I went to my team and said, is there a bigger conversation we can have with this company? Because at that point I was basically an unofficial ambassador for it in my mom circles.” Thank goodness she did! By the end of her time on stage, the former Disney star left us feeling some serious #PeriodPride.
Hilary and Jessica happily chatted about their respective parenting styles as well. When asked for the best piece of parenting advice she’s received, Hilary lauded the many parenting classes she’s taken in LA. “I pick and choose what I want to implement in my household from those classes – and who I am as a mother.” Hilary also advocated for parents to teach their children that periods are nothing to be ashamed of, and a natural part of life. We’re SO here for her decision to educate her daughter AND son about periods in the same way.
“It’s about retraining the way we think and the way we teach our kids about our period and something that goes on in your body – we should be proud. (I believe in) talking to my son about it, who’s seven, and making sure he’s cool with it and understands it and is completely informed.”
We’re so grateful to Hilary for joining us at #BlogHer20 Health — and for teaching our audience about the importance of knowing everything that’s going into your body. Thanks for starting the conversation, girl! We’re choosing all our personal and household products mindfully in 2020!
