The protests ignited by the murder of George Floyd and countless others seemingly lit a fire under everyone’s backside this year. The Black Lives Matter movement is more active than ever, corporate brands are being held accountable for inequity, and both creators and consumers are shifting their focus to support minority-owned brands.
There are many ways to impact change, whether it’s hitting the streets with protest signs, signing petitions, or simply educating yourself and others. But one of the most direct ways to support the Black community right now is by purchasing from Black-owned businesses, many of which have been unfortunately affected by the economic effects of the pandemic.
Thankfully, social media platforms have been updating their features at a similar same rate, thus giving these companies more opportunity to reach their full potential and more importantly, sustain what they’ve worked so hard to create. Instagram’s latest initiative, Instagram Shop, has been particularly helpful. Seeing as most of us spend more time than we should on the app anyway, it’s hardly surprising that more shopping features would be unveiled to keep us from venturing off too far.
Instagram Shop, which lives inside the all-too familiar “Explore” tab, allows brand owners to amplify their e-commerce efforts by creating collections that their followers can easily browse and purchase directly without ever leaving the app. For those of us who want to reallocate our hard-earned dollars to Black-owned businesses, this is a foolproof (and convenient) way to make good on our word.
As they say, when one buys things, they’re casting a vote for the type of world they want to live in, so here are a variety of 10 Black-owned and woman-owned businesses to keep on your radar.
